If you’ve ever built a wheelset from scratch, in the days before manufacturer’s pre-built wheels made handbuilt wheels a bit of a rarity, it’s likely rim names such as Mavic Open Pro or CXP ring to mind. A lot has changed in the world of wheels, and carbon is often the go-to for new wheels.
With this in mind, Mavic has released four new carbon rims as follows:

All of Mavic’s rims ship with tape, valve stems and nipple washers and should begin shipping sometime in April of 2019. Price is $US 499.99 each. Rim brake models receive Mavic’s laser-etched braking surface and their own brand of brake pads are recommended, although they aren’t included.
In addition to rims, Mavic is releasing a line of hubs, which harkens back to the days of the company’s 8-speed gruppos from the early 1990’s, and the SSC groups of the 1980’s.
Hubs will utilize traditional flanges for J-bend spokes and cater to rim and disc brake. Rim brake hubs will be available in 20h front / 24h rear and disc brake in 24/28/32 hole. The rear hubs utilize Mavic’s ID360 engagement mechanism and will be available later in summer of 2019.
Mavic Prototype Carbon Gravel Wheels
These prototype Mavic wheels were hiding in plain sight for all to see. The pair above is 650b, fitted with WTB’s Resolute 42mm tyre.
The 700c gravel wheelset was fitted with Mavic’s Yksion Elite Allroad XL tyres in 40mm.
Both pair of wheels featured very subtle branding.
Hubs were the newest of Mavic’s hubs, mentioned earlier, although they are using Mavic’s proprietary direct-pull bladed spoke design.
