From the company’s website – “Santa Cruz Bicycles was founded in 1993 in a space the size of a single car garage in the Seabright Cannery, in Santa Cruz California. Our first bike, the Tazmon, was a single pivot dual suspension bike that rattled established sensibilities and helped define our then- ethos of “simply advanced.” That bike was the cornerstone for a brand that was founded on the notion of doing things our own way in order to build the best. We have been rattling sensibilities ever since.”
Santa Cruz have plenty of experience in carbon fiber construction. When carbon fiber was first making inroads into the cycling market, the company constructed mountain bikes from the material – along with a downhill bike!
The original Stigmata was constructed from alumin(i)um – with advances in carbon construction and prices on the woven material coming down, it made sense for the company to re-introduce the Stigmata – but with the touches one would expect from a modern day gravel and cyclocross machine.
The new Santa Cruz Stigmata caters for 41mm wide tires (tyres), PressFit 30 bottom bracket, electronic-shifting compatible cable routing, internally routed cable and hose routing – including hose routing through the fork leg.
Completing the build are thru-axles front and rear and a 1 x 11 drivetrain – the Stigmata will cater to a double chainring setup if desired.
This particular Stigmata is owned by Christian Carlqvist, a key player in the Florida cyclocross scene. Christian is an advocate of all things related to cyclocross and gravel cycling, and is the voice of Florida cyclocross – by that we mean, he’s very good on the microphone and can be heard announcing at most races.
