Garth Prosser’s UltraCX Series Winning Specialized S-Works 29’er
This is the machine Mr Prosser rode all year to ultimate Masters points series victory, in the American UltraCross Series for 2014.
In addition to the overall points series win, Garth also won Hilly Billy Roubaix and Iron Cross XII. Garth’s MTB dispels the notion that cross bikes are always the bike of choice for UltraCX. The rider, their ability and a fun attitude is what counts!
I neglected to ask Garth about the size of frame he’s riding, but it appears to be about 19″, as far as MTB frames are measured. Check out how much seatpost is exposed!
The bike was last raced at the final round of the American UltraCross Series, the Sub 9 Gravel Grovel in Norman, Indiana. See it in action in the Race Video.

Tyres: Specialized Renegade 29 x 1.8″ Control, configured tubeless.
Handlebars: Specialized Carbon S-Works.

Shifters: Shimano XTR, 10 speed.
Derailleurs: Shimano XTR, 10 speed.
Crankset: Specialized S-Works Carbon, 38T big ring, 28T small ring.
Bottom Bracket: Specialized.
Pedals: Crank Brothers Egg Beaters.
Cassette: Shimano, 11-36.
Brakes: Shimano XTR, hydraulic disc.
Brake Rotors: Ultralight alloy, about 50gm a rotor, unknown brand. Rear rotor pictured is not usually on the bike.

Weight on the complete bike, sans gnome, is about 19.5lbs.

Rotors would have been a set of the ultra lights aluminum that appear on the front, but I was too lazy to swap the rear back after a training ride. I can’t say who made them, they weigh 50g each and are older than dirt.

Thanks Garth, I’ll correct the article. I tried to glean as much off the photos as possible. I would have asked you more about the bike before the Sub 9, but my mind was distracted by the race!
