Officina Battaglin, the renowned Italian framebuilder founded by cycling legend Giovanni Battaglin, introduces the Matera: a custom-finished modern steel gravel bike inspired by Italy’s oldest city.

Handcrafted in Officina Battaglin’s workshop in northern Italy by the hands of true craftsmen, the Matera is built from Columbus Spirit HSS tubing, carefully fillet-brazed by skilled artisans. Each frame carries the unmistakable Battaglin signature style — precision, elegance, and a ride quality that only handmade steel can deliver.

“There’s an almost philosophical connection between Matera’s ancient stone dwellings, etched directly into the limestone, and a steel frame handmade in Italy,” said Giovanni Battaglin, founder of Officina Battaglin and winner of the 1981 Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.

“Just as Matera has withstood the test of time, handcrafted steel frames have maintained their special place in cycling despite newer materials coming and going. We’ve created a bike that connects riders to the terrain in the same way Matera’s ancient structures connect to the landscape – through harmony, not domination.”

The Matera steel frame is paired with a carbon fork. Available in 5 standard sizes, it’s disc-brake only and compatible exclusively with 1X groupsets, with generous 700×50 tire clearance for tackling rugged gravel routes. To ensure reliability even on remote adventures, the frame integrates the Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH), providing easy replacement availability worldwide.
A Personalized Statement with 20 Custom Finish Options
Riders can choose from 20 unique finishes to make their Matera a true expression of personal style. The “Matera Minimal” range offers five sleek, solid colors, while the premium “Matera Select” upgrade unlocks 15 of Officina Battaglin’s famed cromovelato finishes — translucent layers that create a stunning, shimmering effect over the steel frame.

“Gravel bikes are about freedom,” says Alex Battaglin, CEO of Officina Battaglin. “That freedom shouldn’t stop at the ride. We want riders to feel connected to their Matera, not just through how it rides but through how it looks and feels.”
