What gear range can I achieve with the SRAM RED 36T Max rear derailleur with my current 2x SRAM RED eTap AXS system?

  • The benefit of a larger maximum cassette size will allow for a greater gear range while also offering closer gear steps across the cassette for maintaining a comfortable cadence. With a 46/33T crankset paired with a 10-36T cassette, you achieve 502% gear range with a sub 1:1 gear ratio (.92). With a 48/35T crankset, you have a 494% gear range yet still reach sub 1:1 gear ratio (.97).

Is there a marking or indication on the rear derailleur to know if it is a 36T Max or 33T Max version?

  • Yes. Going forward, all SRAM RED eTap AXS rear derailleurs are marked with MAX 36T or MAX 33T on the back of the derailleur near the B-Bolt. All SRAM RED and Force eTap AXS rear derailleurs without any MAX marking near the B-Bolt are 33T maximum cassette size.

Can you push the limits even further by combining with a Roadlink? To achieve maybe a 40T limit?

    • JOM JOM

I would think so, but a cassette is currently the problem. Barring Shimano / SRAM 12-Speed MTB cassettes that are way beyond 40T, I am not aware of other options, and I don’t know if spacing is exactly the same between the brands.
