The Swine Festival; Climax’s annual festival is held on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew rides a course of his own design, starting and ending in Climax, Georgia. Ridden on the Thanksgiving Holiday of 2023, JOM and LGC unknowingly missed the Climax Swine Festival by a couple of days. Along the way, JOM and LGC pass through the towns of Attapulgus, Georgia, and Bainbridge, Georgia.

Whigham, Georgia

“The community was named after Robert Whigham, a local merchant. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Whigham as a town in 1896. It was incorporated again as a city in 1970.”

Attapulgus, Georgia

“The town’s name is an Indian word meaning “Dogwood”; due to the abundance of attapulgite, which makes up the clay soil throughout much of the Southeast, the mineral was named after the town.”

Bainbridge, Georgia

“The first European settlement in what is today Bainbridge was a trading post set up by James Burges in the late 18th century. From him comes the name Burg”es’s Bluff.  The town was named after U.S. Navy Commodore William Bainbridge, commander of the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), and was incorporated on December 22, 1829. On October 10, 2018, Bainbridge fell victim to Hurricane Michael. The storm left widespread damage through the city limits, including downed trees, power lines, and structural damage. Many residents affected suffered severe damage to their homes.
